Where to find us
American River is a small town on the north-east coast of Kangaroo Island, South Australia. The “river” is actually an inlet from the sea into Eastern Cove and, further south, Pelican Lagoon.
The RIG Boathouse is situated in the centre of the township at the entrance to American River Wharf on Tangara Drive - check the map below.
Most days we are open, and usually, there is a volunteer tour guide from about 10:30 - 2:30. Visitors are welcome.
You may find volunteers working on crafting new sections of the Independence replica. We welcome advance calls from visitors to Kangaroo Island interested in our history and keen to see our project.
The Deck Cafe at the Wharf
American River's local Wharf-side Café alongside the Rebuild Independence Boathouse is a popular place for visitors and locals to stop for a meal or coffee whilst soaking up the atmosphere of boats sailing past, birdlife and the occasional seal.
